Mark 1:1-8 (CEB)                                        12/06/20

The beginning of the good news about Jesus Christ, God’s Son.
It happened just as it was written about in the prophecy of Isaiah:

Look, I am sending my messenger before you.
He will prepare your way,
a voice shouting in the wilderness:
        “Prepare the way for the Lord;
        make his paths straight.”[Isaiah 40:3]

John the Baptist was in the wilderness calling for people to be baptized to show that they were changing their hearts and lives and wanted God to forgive their sins. Everyone in Judea and all the people of Jerusalem went out to the Jordan River and were being baptized by John as they confessed their sins. John wore clothes made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist. He ate locusts and wild honey. He announced, “One stronger than I am is coming after me. I’m not even worthy to bend over and loosen the strap of his sandals.
I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

Hymn                           It Came upon the Midnight Clear         UMH 218
words: Edmund H. Sears, 1849                                      music: Richard Storrs Willis, 1850

1.     It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old,
from angels bending near the earth, to touch their harps of gold:
“Peace on the earth, good will to men, from heaven’s all-gracious King.”
The world in solemn stillness lay, to hear the angels sing.

4.     For lo! the days are hastening on, by prophet seen of old,
when with the ever-circling years shall come the time foretold
when peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendors fling,
and the whole world send back the song which now the angels sing.

A Responsive Reading from Psalm 85                                          UMH 806

Lord, you showed favor to your land; you restored the fortunes of Jacob.
You forgave the iniquity of your people; you pardoned all their sin.

You withdrew all your wrath; you turned from your hot anger.
Restore us again, O God of our salvation
and put away your indignation toward us!

Will you be angry with us forever?
Will you prolong your anger to all generations?
Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you?
Show us your steadfast love, O Lord, and grant us your salvation.

Let me hear what God will speak,
for the Lord will speak peace to his people,
to his faithful, to those who turn to the Lord in their hearts.
Surely salvation is at hand for those who fear the Lord,
that glory may dwell in our land.

Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet;
righteousness and peace will kiss each other.
Faithfulness will spring up from the ground,
and righteousness will look down from the sky.

The Lord will give what is good, and our land will yield its increase.
Righteousness will go before the Lord, and make God’s footsteps a way.

Advent Candle Lighting

Last Sunday we lit the first candle of Advent, the candle of Hope.
Today we light the second candle of Advent, the candle of Peace.

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.” Col 3:15

Thank you, Lord, for the gift of Peace.

Opening Prayer                                     Advent                                UMH201

Merciful God, you sent your messengers the prophets
   to preach repentance  and prepare the way for our salvation.
Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins,
   that we may celebrate aright  the commemoration of the nativity,
and may await with joy  the coming in glory of Jesus Christ  our Redeemer;
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, One God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Special Music

2 Peter 3:8-15a (NRSV)                                                               12/06/20

But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day. The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed.

11 Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness, 12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire? 13 But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home.

14 Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish; 15 and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation. ò

Response to the Word:

Hymn                                            Emmanuel, Emmanuel          UMH 204
words & music: Bob McGee, 1976

Emmanuel, Emmanuel, his name is called Emmanuel.
God with us, revealed in us, his name is called Emmanuel.   (sung twice)

Holy Communion
with the Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
   as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Prayer After Communion

Eternal God, we give you thanks for this holy mystery
   in which you have given yourself to us.
Grant that we may go into the world
   in the strength of your Spirit,
   to give ourselves for others,
in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Closing Hymn                              O Come, All Ye Faithful         UMH 234
words & music: John F. Wade, 1743

1.     O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant,
O come ye, O come ye, to Bethlehem.
Come and behold him, born the King of angels;

    Refrain:     O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him,
                    O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord.

2.     True God of true God, Light from Light Eternal,
lo, he shuns not the Virgin’s womb;
Son of the Father, begotten, not created;

    Refrain:     O come, let us adore him …

3.     Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation;
O sing, all ye citizens of heaven above!
Glory to God, all glory in the highest;
    Refrain:     O come, let us adore him …
