• Remember the one about the five blind men (who had never seen an elephant) that were asked to describe an elephant? (rope, tree trunk, tent flap, wall, snake)
• In our readings today we have several chances to “Behold the Man.” To see Jesus. What do different people see?
Crowds (Palm Sun): Jesus the hero, the exalted one, the king. Right?
Judas (Matt 26): This is not the leader I expected. This is embarrassing. Turn the other cheek? Wasteful? Foolish.
Peter, James, and John (Matt 26, in the garden): Spirit is willing flesh is weak. I am tired and distracted and confused. Much effort.
Pilate (Matt 27): Aligning myself with Jesus is political suicide, a real threat and hindrance to my career.
Jesus himself (Matt 26, in the garden): deeply grieved for what’s coming.
Willing to face what comes, for God, willing for the people.
• Last week DS Hayes on Philippians 2, Selfless Jesus, humble. Have his attitude.
Eyes of faith fixed forward together
Regardless of pain, Jesus focused on task, the ultimate yes to God.
Jesus says the ultimate yes for the Church as well.
• What do people see of Jesus in you?
Teacher, good man, son of God, savior?
• Jesus was unique in history and irreplaceable in salvation
He reconnects me with who God made me.
• Response: yes God, thank you God.

Matthew 21:1-9 (NRSV)
21 When they had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, just say this, ‘The Lord needs them.’ And he will send them immediately.” 4 This took place to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet, saying,
5 “Tell the daughter of Zion,
Look, your king is coming to you,
humble, and mounted on a donkey,
and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”
6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; 7 they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. 8 A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting,

“Hosanna to the Son of David!
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!
Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
